The Nativity Fast
Starting with November 15 until December 24, the Nativity Fast is a period of abstinence, penance and prayers in preparation for the nativity of Christ. First of all it must be an abstinence from the bad things which keep us away from God and people. For 40 days, christians should fasting from meat, meat products, poultry, eggs, dairy products, fish, oil and wine. The fish, oil and the wine are allowed on saturdays and sundays starting with november 21 until december 16, however this days are marked in the Orthodox Calendar.
The Nativity Fast reminds the lengthy fasting of the patriarchs from the Old Testament awaiting the coming of Messiah and the period of 40 days reminds us of Moses on Sinai when he fasted pending the God’s revelation, The Ten Commandments (The Decalogue).
